Special Education
When working with special education students, I believe there are several important factors. There are the implied supports such as accommodations listed in student's IEP, and collaboration between parents, teacher, and case manager. However, in my opinion, high engagement needs to be present in a special education class as well. With the needs of students in mind, when teachers are able to include excitement and as well as tie in experiences familiar to the student, a foundation for additional learning is built.
Executive Function Weakness
I am very familiar with executive function weaknesses and being able to identify students with Aspergers. My younger brother has a form of high functioning Autism, very similar to Aspergers. As my parents worked with my brothers teachers and people in the special education field, we realized there was not adequate information on executive function weaknesses. Throughout my brothers life, my mother has been in contact with dozens of doctors, researched and read many books on the topic. While I was taking courses at the University of Kansas in the School of Education, we worked together in collaboration to make the pamphlet below. My mother uses this to distribute to counseling offices at my brothers schools. I use this pamphlet at my own school when parents of 504 and IEP students ask for ideas on how to best help their children.
